The Falkirk Wheel
Mark Stephen visits Scotland’s stunning rotating boat lift and the people who live by it and love it, taking the story from its design to today.
Mark Stephen hears the story of the Falkirk Wheel - Scotland’s stunning rotating canal boat lift - from the people who live by it and love it. The Wheel, nearly twenty years old now, has been likened in its design to a Celtic axe or a ship’s propeller or a slender necked bird, and when people describe it they look for units like ‘double decker buses’ or the energy it takes to boil kettles and run toasters. It’s the eye-catching, eco-friendly centrepiece of the millennium link project which restored the historic Forth and Clyde canal and the Union canal to navigability and gave Falkirk a landmark tourist draw to be a focus for regeneration. But has it lived up to its expectations? Mark finds out.
