Pause For Thought
Boiling hot, chunky tomato soup in too thin paper cups, and sticky sausages straight from the oven, eaten outdoors dripping grease onto our best clothes.聽聽The meal had all the trappings of our Guy Fawkes night annual party when I was a child 鈥 long before health and safety, rightly, put a ban on roaring, roasting bonfires at home, and spark shooting Catherine wheels attached precariously to our garden fence. Except this was no 1970s November 5th聽family gathering in suburban north London.聽聽Whilst still suburban North London, this was our covid friendly adaptation of Rosh Hashana, Jewish New year, just this week.聽
With so many vulnerable family members - from my dad at 96 to my soon-to-be-born great nephew - the stakes were high.聽聽聽Squishing round a too small table with a shared, over-licked spoon in the symbolic honey jar, and not enough air to breath never mind to flow, was not an option. So after endless feverish taps on the weather app, 20 of us descended on my brother鈥檚 accessible if rather unkempt, garden.聽聽I brought the freshly baked 鈥 not by me 鈥 round challah.聽聽My mum had the fishballs with spicy horseradish.聽聽The apples, sliced to dip in the individual portions of honey for a sweet year, came from the tree literally and precariously above our heads.聽
As Jews have done for thousands of years, and as the sun went down over the urban sprawl, we lit the candles and recited the blessings.聽聽Then, balanced on folding chairs, we dripped honey over our apples, and our un-napkined laps, and main coursed on platters of not remotely Jewish, but delicious, sushi only interrupted by my nephew on holiday in Greece Zooming in to announce his engagement. We weren鈥檛 in my mum鈥檚 cosy flat but at least we were all-together with family.聽聽The eminent Rabbi David Rosen wrote: 鈥淭he family is the central institution of Jewish life around which daily, weekly and annual religious observance resolves鈥.聽聽And he is right. Unlike our Guy Fawkes gatherings, this tomato soup was from a carton, the paper plates were compostable, the sausages were vegetarian and we were all socially distanced.聽聽But, just like those bonfire parties of my childhood, and from my perspective with huge gratitude, we were, at least all together.聽聽聽
