Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

There’s a saying where I’m from that goes: ‘your bladder’s near your eye’ and it means, you’ll pretty much cry at anything. That used to be true of me until I went off to train at vicar school.   You see in my line of work, if I cried every time something sad, or happy happened, I wouldn’t look very professional.  So, I learnt to control my tears.

Of course, Zoe, from time to time it backfires.

Last Saturday night I was, as usual in Salford, staying over ahead of my early Sunday morning show here on Radio 2, hubby Graham was with me and as we ventured out to dinner realised he’d left something in the room, so I took a seat in the reception area of the hotel to wait for him. I sat there and watched the world go by, folk in fancy frocks, new heels and hair dos, and taxis pulling up outside.  And then I realised where I was, sat on a sofa that for the last 18 months had been entirely absent, rightly taken away when the hotel stayed open only for essential workers and mixing of any sort with others was, rightly so, redistricted. The hotel was a very different and lonely place back then. The sofa, without ceremony or proclamation was back. And it got me. I cried so loud and so hard that a member of the bar staff came over to check that I was ok.

Tears are the most human of emotions and have healing powers and heaven knows we all need time for that. The shortest verse in the bible is just two words, John 11; 35 ‘Jesus wept.’ and this little verse reminds me not only of the humanity of the Saviour I believe in, but that if having a good roer was enough for the Son of God, it’s probably good enough for this daughter of Yorkshire.

Things aren’t normal yet, and we still must be very, very careful, but I’m so glad I had my cry on the sofa last Saturday, and let myself feel what I’m feeling. Of course now I’ve let the tears come they keep coming, but that’s ok, I’ll let myself, in fact, you’ll have to excuse me Zoe because I can feel myself welling up right now.
