Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Friday will be the first anniversary since my mum’s passing. When she passed, I said at the time that I wish I could bottle the grief, so I could take a drop from it every now and then - so that I never forget the feelings, and the lessons I was learning. I need not have worried.ÌýI can’t forget. Indeed, I’ve cried every single day since she died.

Ìý

At least once a day my heart feels gripped by the pain of missing her, of the realisation that she isn’t here. Some days are harder than others. Those days it’s like a belly punch. A panic almost. I can suddenly be transported back to the moment I found out she was gone – and to feel the confusion of those seconds.Ìý

Ìý

Since her passing there have been a lot of firsts – the first Christmas without her, the first birthday, the first grandchild, the first Ramadan, the first Eid – all experienced without her. But as we approach the first anniversary of her passing my focus has been on a lot of lasts – the anniversary of the last meal together, the last family birthday she celebrated, the last photograph taken of her, the last time I saw her alive… I dream of her sometimes. She is always happy and bright.

My Muslim belief in an after life means I feel content that she is in a better place – surrounded by colour, and beauty, blissfully happy. But despite these happy thoughts of the beauty of where she may be – for me, carrying the grief, an aching heart, and coming to terms with the magnitude of the loss really is a test. It’d really hard, and August has been a rough old month to be honest. The grief has been so very very raw.Ìý

Ìý

But it continues to teach me… to put into stark relief the things which are important.ÌýSometimes someone will moan to me about something their loved one has said or done…ÌýI just look at them and think – but they are here in this world to moan about… they are here in this world and can annoy you… Be grateful! And gratitude is something I feel a lot of. So grateful of the love that makes the loss so huge and painful. So whilst it hurts – I wouldn’t change it for the world.
