Script

Good morning.聽

Walking as I do in the early mornings with my dog, I often come across other dog walkers, and I鈥檓 always bowled over by the variety in size and shape of them. The dogs that is, not the walkers. When my dog was younger it played happily with a huge dog that looked like a cross between a St Bernard and a horse, and she is equally happy rolling around with the smallest terrier. Dogs don鈥檛 seem to see differences in breed, they鈥檙e not seemingly bothered by colour of fur or size or shape. Great apes, of which humans are a part, are seemingly very tribal and are afraid of differences such as skin colour and type and tribe in a way that dogs are not.聽

Of the recent racist incidents surrounding the English football team, it shocked me that there were still people from our culture and country,聽 who not only held racist views, but felt it was okay to share those views out loud. We talk about people behaving like animals, yet dogs seem to play with all varieties of their kind. Perhaps we have much to learn from the animal kingdom.聽

Almighty God, you have made us in an infinite and beautiful variety, and we give thanks to you for the breadth of our traditions and cultures, our languages and civilisations. We are all your children, and we ask for your forgiveness when we have seen our differences as barriers to doing your will, rather than part of the richness of your creative work.

We ask you to make us anew, that we may have the courage to make joyful sacrifices,聽 so that others may be equal not only in your eyes, but in the eyes of the world. Amen.
