The Glasgow School of Art, iconic in the city鈥檚 architecture and beloved of the many art students who have entered its doors over a century. Designed over 100 years ago by world renowned Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the building is a tale of creative personal challenge and celebration, ending in an extraordinary national tragedy.

Artist and broadcaster, Calum Angus Mackay, explores the deep connection he, his family and other students, past and present feel for Mackintosh鈥檚 Art School and their devastation when fire ripped through the building in 2014, only to be matched by their horror when, after painstaking rebuilding, a second fire in 2018 all but destroyed 鈥楾he Mack鈥.

Artist Ishbel Murray was in Glasgow in May 2014 when news started to filter through that the Art School was on fire, walking up to Renfrew Street she was shocked and pained at the scenes of 鈥楾he Mack鈥 ablaze. Within hours a fund had started to attract donations to rebuild the Art School.

In the cruellest of blows, just as work was nearing completion, on the 15th June 2018, news broke of an echo of the horror of four years prior - that the Art School was once again ablaze. In many ways a more devastating fire and to date no phoenix has risen from the 2018 ashes. Shrouded in scaffolding, the future of 鈥楾he Mack鈥 is still uncertain today.
