The legacy of the Berlin Wall 60 years after it was built; how filling empty homes could help homelessness & children's author Piers Torday on his new book about climate change.

A new report shows that Scotland has more empty homes per capita than England and Wales but with homelessness rising in Scotland, is it time to requisition empty homes? Tony Kearney is joined by Jon Sparkes, CEO of homelessness charity Crisis, Shelter Scotland’s Shaheena Din and Susan Aktemel of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖs for Good to explore possible solutions to homelessness.

With recent flooding and bushfires across the world, and with COP26 on the horizon here in Scotland, it seems as though the climate crisis is on everyone’s minds. But how do we talk about the issue with children? Author Piers Torday has done just that with his much loved The Last Wild trilogy, and now again with his prequel to the series, ‘The Wild Before’, which he speaks about with Tony.

Karen Morrison from the charity STAR, that works to unite siblings in foster care, explains the importance of recent legislation from the Scottish Government aiming to keep siblings in foster care together.

Half the population will go through the menopause and the other half will know someone who does, yet it is rarely talked about. Ruth Devlin, who takes menopause workshops into workplaces, and Rachel Weiss, the founder of menopause cafes, discuss why it’s time to change the way we speak about the menopause.

This week marks the 60th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall. Edinburgh based West Berliner Tico Seifert shares what it was like growing up in the shadow of it, and Alison Phipps, Professor of Languages and Intercultural Studies at the University of Glasgow, talks about her memories of living in the city and the legacy of the wall.

You may have heard about people prescribing time in nature to improve one’s health, but what about prescribing books? Tony Kearney finds out about the power of literature and poetry - particularly women’s writing – with Alison Phipps and Helen Boden, poet and writer.
