Matt Lucas sits in for Zoe and chats to the UK's soul queen, Mica Paris. Mica made an immediate impact on the UK music scene in 1988 when she released her debut, the platinum-selling So Good album. She followed with more worldwide hit albums and singles, and has collaborated with many respected artists such as Prince and Jools Holland, leading to her to being considered one of the UK鈥檚 most respected female singers with the terrific range, power, and sheer soulfulness of her voice. She's playing dates across the UK, performing music from her latest album, Gospel, which mixes classic hits such as 鈥極h Happy Day鈥� and 鈥楽omething Inside (So Strong)鈥� and original songs which give emotional insights into Paris鈥檚 life.

Pause For Thought

This time on Friday I was polishing my shoes, ironing my shirt and doing a few hundred last minute things before getting married.听听I even trimmed the hair on my ears 鈥� sorry, a wee bit too much information there鈥�

听

Nothing surprising or unusual in all of that, but it crossed my mind: do I really need to be doing all this?听听After all, my wife鈥ust getting used to saying that鈥� my wife, Judith, knows what I鈥檓 like, and most of the time I look nothing like I did on Friday.听听Although, my brother always tells people that in 2010 I was voted the best dressed man 鈥� of 1982!

听

But, of course, if you love someone you will do that special thing for them, go the extra mile, you want to please them.听听If I鈥檇 turned up in jeans and a T-shirt she鈥檇 still love me just as much 鈥fter the bruising went down鈥�.

听

And I guess that鈥檚 why marriage is used as a metaphor in the Bible for God鈥檚 relationship with us.听听When you get married you take solemn vows, to love each other for better or worse 鈥榓s long as ye both shall live.鈥� And I believe God loves me in the same way, even more 鈥� he鈥檒l love me for life and longer!听听Like my wife鈥 do like saying that鈥od knows me only too well, and still loves me.

听

And so, like polishing the shoes and sprucing myself up for the wedding, my response to God鈥檚 love is that I want to please God, I want to do my best鈥e my best for God.听听My faith isn鈥檛 about doing good stuff because I鈥檓 afraid of punishment, it鈥檚 a response to love.听听And because it starts with God鈥檚 love, there is nothing I can do to make him love me more.听

听

But, the really radical difference is, that although it is conceivable that I could hurt someone so much that they couldn鈥檛 bring themselves to stay married to me - there is nothing I could ever do that would make God love me any less.听听

听

And that鈥檚 the kind of love that I and my wife 鈥� there it is again! 鈥� asked God to bless us with in the church on Friday.

听
