Script

Good morning.

Today is International Joke Day….and the beginning of the second half of the calendar year.

The intention of telling a joke is of course to provide some humour and amusement and encourage a laugh or a smile – and it’s these light hearted expressions that offer a good place from which to embrace the remainder of the year.

I don’t think I’m very good at telling jokes, and have a tendency towards sarcasm, which Oscar Wilde said was the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of intelligence - so I’ll just encourage you to begin the day thinking of something that makes you smile….

Laughter and humour, and the simple expression of a smile, offer much psychologically.  Our bodies respond positively to endorphins they release, and even in the darkest of situations laughter can bring a healing touch. We have so many complex emotions in all that makes us human, that we might forget how the simple things can make a difference.

During this strange time we have all been living through, we have been wearing masks – literally and metaphorically. One of the face masks I use has a smile stitched on it, and it’s amazing how many people respond and speak to me or smile back because of it – it’s really made me notice how people smile with their eyes too.

Finding joy in the midst of challenging times is so important….so I hope today, and in the remainder of this year, there is much to make you smile.

God of life and love, you did not make us only for seriousness and solemnity.  Open our hearts to all that makes life full, as we thank you for laughter and those who make us smile.  Amen.
