Billie Piper and Smith & Burrows

Billie Piper tells Zoe about her new film and Smith & Burrows perform live from the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's Maida Vale studios.

Billie Piper, the actress, singer and director, tells Zoe about her new film Rare Beasts which she wrote. It's Billie's directorial debut and is a black comedy that tells the story of Mandy, played by Billie, who is a mother, a writer and a nihilist. Mandy is described as a modern woman in a crisis. Raising a son, Larch (played by Toby Woolf) in the midst of a female revolution, mining the pain of her parents' separation and professionally writing about a love that no longer exists, she falls upon a troubled man, Pete (played by Leo Bill), who is searching for a sense of worth, belonging and ‘restored’ male identity. Billie Piper is an award-winning British actress and household name. After a successful career as a chart-topping pop musician, Billie went on to play the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler in the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's reinvention of Doctor Who in 2005. She followed up her success by starring as the lead in The Secret Diary of a Call Girl, a hit TV series which she also supported as Executive Producer.

Smith & Burrow's perform live from the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's Maida Vale studios. Andy Burrows is a prolific solo artist, a popular stand-in musician (both We Are Scientists and Tom Odell have called on his services as a writer and for extended periods of touring) and Ricky Gervais’s musical wingman of choice: he wrote songs for (and acted in) David Brent: Life on the Road and has scored both seasons of the comedian’s hit Netflix series After Life. As the group’s main songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Tom Smith has been at the helm of Editors for six albums, accelerated by incessant touring, it's seen the five-piece become one of the biggest British bands across Europe. Last year they summed up their 15-year career in a 16-track greatest hits, Black Gold. Together Smith & Burrows have released their latest album, Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough, earlier this year.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I’m proud to say one thing we do well at our house, Zoe is recycling. The kitchen windowsill is awash with rinsed out jam jars, and the fridge is a treasure trove of reused takeaway tubs filled with bits of this and that, destined for a curry. It’s rare that food goes in the bin.

Ìý

On Tuesday, I had lunch at the sort of place that speaks my kind of language. Refuse café in Durham is challenging food waste. If a supermarket over orders on bread or still has a stock of unsold Easter Eggs, the Refuse volunteers swing into action. It’s donated, collected and turned into a feast for customers at the café.ÌýÌý

Ìý

But that’s not all, because at Refuse it isn’t just the food that doesn’t go to waste, many of the beautiful humans that work there talk about how they’ve been sort of recycled too. There’s Marilyn who was suddenly widowed, and feeling lost, she came to help one day and found a new purpose amongst the pots and pans. And Bobby who struggled with addiction talks of the folk at the café like they’re family, has learnt new skills and found a smile.Ìý

Ìý

There’s a story in the bible that’s sort of well known, that the cafe reminded me of, the feeding of the 5 thousand. A lad donates his lunch and Jesus makes it stretch, but the second half of the story is the tidying up, once the crowd has gone. The disciples litter pick the picnic area and collect 12 baskets of leftover food, leaving not a crumb wasted.

Ìý

I believe in a God that doesn’t do waste and I think probably doesn’t want me to either. Not just food, but lives too, to not see anyone as disregarded and discarded but to look at the person and see the potential for a new beginning and a fresh start. To take the bits of ourselves that might be considered fit only for the bin and turn them into a banquet.

Ìý

I had a lovely lunch, the surplus bread was crumbled to coat corn fed organic chicken and the Easter eggs transformed into the best Rocky Road I’ve ever tasted. I couldn’t manage a whole slice so I put some my pocket for the journey home, after all, Zoe, I wouldn’t want it to be wasted.
