Alan helps with a spiritual crisis and Susan’s ideas miss the mark.

Susan recounts to Jennifer, in a not altogether approving manner, Joy’s life modelling exploits. Nevertheless Joy gets Susan’s vote for parish council. Disappointed to hear Jennifer has everything in hand for Martha’s christening, Susan updates Jennifer on her own plans: party favours and Martha-shaped biscuits for every guest. Jennifer insists weakly that she sees them. She declares the biscuits ‘interesting’ and doesn’t need to say any more. Susan understands they’re not what Jennifer was expecting – but they’re a way of expressing her love and pride for the new little family. Surely Jennifer feels the same about her own part in the arrangements? Jennifer admits she does, and the two bond and laugh over the odd-shaped biscuits. Jennifer offers to join forces to make them spectacular.

Alan walks stressed Alice through Thursday’s christening service. He’s pleased Alice asked for this christening. But Alice feels God must be judging her terribly. She’s selfish and she’s hurt people she loves. Alan reassures her; God’s love is unconditional. He explains the meaning behind a baptism and suggests a reading. Alice is loved; there is forgiveness and hope for the future, if she wants it. Later Alice admits she’s struggled to see a future. But she’s found a picture from the past, which together with Alan’s words, has unlocked part of her brain. As she and Chris choose pictures together for an album, Alice saves space for one which will include Martha on her first holiday; they’re going to the beach.
