Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Two t-shirts, a warm wool jumper, jeans, winter puffy coat, fluffy scarf and I was ready.听听I did add a lick of lippy, normally reserved for my best Zoom calls, and had, as a special concession, even washed my hair. For this was no regular outing.听听听Dressed like Arctic explorers my husband Dan and I braved the elements, hailing a taxi for the first time in months, and cruising through quiet streets to London鈥檚 fashionable Kings Cross. Our mission, outdoor dinner with our friends Judy and Uri.听

The restaurant did their best 鈥 it was filled with people like me, desperate for some socially distanced but nonetheless social contact, meeting people they hadn鈥檛 been stuck inside with for months, for some cooking they hadn鈥檛 reluctantly rustled together themselves, and willing to sit outside on hard chairs covered with small blankets, on narrow pavements definitely not designed for today鈥檚 Covid caf茅 culture.听

Judy and Uri were late, unfashionably late, and by the time they arrived we had started the transition to ice cubes despite an environmentally unfriendly gas heater doing its best to keep us thawed.听

When it came, the food was fine, understandably a bit cold in the seemingly sub-zero evening air, but the pea soup at least, was warmer than me and by this stage this was all that mattered.听听

Well almost all that mattered.听听Our friends had arrived full of apologies, gentle gossip, energy, and life.听听We laughed about the cold soup, we ordered white wine which chilled itself, we thanked the waiters profusely for the restaurant being open, and we made plans for a future when we can hug, travel and be inside.听听We were together and that was what mattered.

A 13th听century rabbi and scholar, Asher ben Yechiel summed it up 鈥渋f you have faithful friends, hold fast to them.听听Let them not go for they are a precious possession鈥

We actually let Judy and Uri go relatively early so the staff could go home and we could thaw out, but even as I stripped off my layers of Arctic clothing, I was back on my computer booking another outing to share with my most precious possession, dear and special friends.听
