Alexandra Burke, the actress and singer, tells Zoe about her new role as The Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The musical returns to the London Palladium this year and also stars Jason Donovan as the Pharoah and Jac Yarrow as Joseph. Alexandra's many West End credits include the lead roles in The Bodyguard, Sister Act, Chess and Chicago. Alexandra first rose to fame winning The X-Factor in 2008, and has since gone on to sell over 5 million records. Released as a concept album in 1969, the stage version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has become one of the world鈥檚 most beloved family musicals. The multi-award-winning show, which began life as a small-scale school concert, has been performed hundreds of thousands of times including multiple runs in the West End and on Broadway, international number one tours, and productions in over 80 countries as far afield as Austria and Zimbabwe and from Israel to Peru.

Pause For Thought

I鈥檓 back in New York now but last week I was still out in California, and woke up to the feeling of a train going under my room. Only it wasn鈥檛 a train, and as I slowly opened my eyes I heard everything shaking and the room was moving side to side. Now, I鈥檓 from Hertfordshire. Earthquakes aren鈥檛 something I know much about. It took me a few seconds of adrenaline to digest what was going on, and by that time, it鈥檇 stopped.听

听

My friend texted to see if I was ok, and we quickly checked the earthquake log online. It was a baby one 鈥� just 3.3 on the Richter scale, but enough to knock a few things over and give me my first taste of that particular encounter with Mother Nature. I was reminded of our vulnerability as human beings, how dependent we are on the shelter of nature; despite our best attempts to harness and control it.

听

Ancient Hindu texts honour the Earth as a goddess and universal mother. Like a mother, she gives abundantly. Like many mothers she doesn鈥檛 keep a tally or demand love in return.听听In my Indian dance classes we used to pray to her, the stability beneath our stamping feet, before beginning our practise.听

听

Earth Day is coming up later this week and I鈥檓 trying to honestly take stock of my recycling and travel habits 鈥� needless to say there鈥檚 much room for improvement. This time last year, there was a glimmer of hope as we saw how the air all over the world cleaned up in an incredibly short time and many species of wildlife return to their natural habitats.听

听

Unfortunately the possibility is all too real of going back to how things were before or worse. Forest fires, floods and food shortage are increasing and the last 6 years were the hottest in recorded history.听

听

It鈥檚 easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what will actually make a difference. Becoming conscious is a first step for me. It鈥檚 like when I was finally out of my teens and actually started to realise what my mum had been doing for me all those years. Now I need to remind myself every day, what my Mother Earth has been bearing all these years, and start to reciprocate.听
