Mark Wigglesworth and the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Philharmonic begin their concert with Beethoven's sparkling First Symphony. Stephen Hough joins the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Philharmonic in Beethoven's majestic ‘Emperor’ Concerto. Haydn's final symphony closes the programme. Written only six years before Beethoven's First, at a time when Haydn was enjoying cult status in London, its confident exuberance is all-pervading right through to the catchy tune in the finale. Is it really a street-seller's song exhorting us to buy his fresh fish?
