Anna Friel and Mica Paris
Anna Friel tells Zoe about the new series of Marcella on ITV and Mica Paris has live music from home exclusively for the show.
Anna Friel, the hugely successful actor, tells Zoe about the brand news of series of Marcella on ITV. Anna’s character Marcella Backland was an unflinching and unrelenting detective in the previous two series. However, at the end of series two, after discovering that she killed her own daughter, Marcella rejected who she was and, in effect, wanted to erase herself. Now she’s undercover with a new persona, Keira Devlin. The series was filmed entirely on location in and around Belfast. Anna Friel has received a number of awards, including a National Television Award for Most Popular Actress for her work on Brookside, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Series Musical or Comedy for Pushing Daisies. In 2017 she won the International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress for Marcella.
Mica Paris, one of the most respected British soul singers, has recorded two live exclusive tracks for Zoe from home with music from her new album 'gospel'. This album is a passion project for Mica who has always wanted to record a gospel album. Mica was brought up on gospel music and sang in her south London church in Lewisham every weekend with her grandparents. Following the success of ‘Gospel According to Mica: The Story of Gospel Music in Six Songs’ on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ earlier this year Mica began recording the album with the Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir. Since scoring her first Top 10 Hit in 1988 with ‘My One Temptation’ Mica has since gone onto release six more albums, published a book and became a popular media personality, from hosting her own Radio 2 soul show, a panelist on ITV’s Loose Women, to more recently - an addition to the cast of EastEnders where she is playing Ellie Nixon, grandmother to Phil and Denise’s adopted baby Raymond.

Pause For Thought
Last week I did a funeral for a lovely 98 year old lady, who simply went to bed one night and went to sleep, a long and happy life brought to a close without any pain or suffering. A golden death if ever there was one and her funeral was along the same lines. Of course not every service I’m part of is quite like that. As we all know no funeral is easy but some are definitely tougher than others. And when a tough one comes along, one that’s shrouded in tragedy, I know to prepare myself thoroughly and make sure I have some time afterwards to gather myself. Â
But I didn’t need to do that in the same way here. Her family, spread across the globe gathered online to watch via web cam and her neighbours of many years gathered at the crem to remember her. We listened to music and her niece wrote a beautiful eulogy. There was a reading and the tears weren’t just from sadness they were from laughter too. She had a good life, a good death and a nice send off. And that’s when I realised I’d taken my eye of the ball just a little bit. You see I’d failed to fully take in that this lovely lady had the same first name as my Mum, Margaret. My Mum who just recently had a bit of tricky health news. And so when I said the words ‘Lord we commend Margaret into you safe keeping.’ The words caught the back of my throat and I wobbled ever so slightly. It doesn’t matter of course, I’m only human. But in that moment I wasn’t just saying that prayer for the person we were saying goodbye to, 98 year old Margaret, I was also asking God to take care of my Margaret, my Mum.
Occasionally my prayers are eloquent, well written prose but more often they’re a cry that comes from somewhere deep inside and are barely words at all just a whispered ‘Oh my God.’  But it’s not the style or the manner of a prayer that counts but it’s spirit, what lies at it’s heart.Â
I did take some time after that funeral, to ring my Mum, and she was in really good spirits, off for another test to figure out the next stages of her treatment. And although she can’t be certain of what lies ahead (who can?) one thing she can count on is my prayers, every step of the way.Â
