Dame Judi Dench and Lola Lennox

Acting royalty Dame Judi Dench calls Zoe to talk about her film 'Blithe Spirit' and there's live music from home courtesy of Annie Lennox's daughter Lola Lennox!

It's another Friends Phone In Friday with Zoe Ball! Today acting royalty graces the Breakfast show as Dame Judi Dench phones Zo to talk about her new film 'Blithe Spirit'. Judi plays Madame Arcati in this new adaptation of Noel Coward's classic play. Judi has a number of personal connections to the film, as she met Noël Coward when she was first starting out as an actor.

Dame Judi is one of the most famous actresses in history and has won one Academy Award, a Tony, four television BAFTA Awards, six film, and seven Laurence Olivier Awards. In recognition of her many achievements she received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1970, and became a DBE (Dame of the British Empire) in 1988. In September 1957, she made her first professional stage appearance with the Old Vic Company, at the Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool, as Ophelia in ‘Hamlet’.
Over the next two decades, she established herself as one of the most significant British theatre performers, working for the National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Plus Zoe has live music from Lola Lennox. Lola is a singer songwriter who is tipped for great things in 2021. Here at Radio 2 we've been loving playing 'Back At Wrong' and 'La La Love Me'. Lola is the daughter of incredible Annie Lennox.

Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, she and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a daily Pause For Thought from Rev Kate Bottley and listeners on the line, as Zoe entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:Ìý
Being from Yorkshire it sometimes feels like we have a saying for everything. ‘Where’s there’s muck there’s brass’ and ‘be reyt’ but just lately the one that’s been really appropriate, and is also personal favourite is ‘Tha bladders near thee eye’. I’ll translate, basically it means ‘you cry at anything’. And Zoe, that’s true, I do like a weep, and not just the things you’d expect like those hospital emergency programmes and sad films. I cried in the park the other day because of how cute a stranger’s dog was.
I do come from a long line of roarers though, my mum sobs at the drop of a hat too, but not so my Dad, he saves his tears for the things that really matter. On Wednesday just gone, my phone rang and it was my Pa, something must be up, because my dad never rings me. I answered in less than 2 rings, ‘We’ve just ‘erd Our Katie’ he said quickly, ever to get to the point, ‘me and yer mam have got our jabs t’mora.’ ‘That’s great’ I said “how do you feel?’ ‘I miss you’ he replied, And then he paused, and even though I couldn’t see him or hear anything I just knew he was having just a little cry. My big strong, rough, tough Daddy bit by the pesky onion ninjas. ‘Anyway, love’ he recovered ‘what yer ‘aving for yer tea?’Ìý
The shortest verse in the whole bible is just two words ‘Jesus wept’, in that case it was over his friend Lazarus, that turned out alright in the end, but for me in these two words in the gospel of John speak volumes. If Jesus wept when he was sad presumably it means he could have wept when he was happy too, or laughing, or rejoicing. If Jesus wept it means that tears can be holy as well as human. There’s been lots of tears (and tiers) in the last 10 months and there’s still plenty to come, of that I’m sure. And I think it’s ok if you’re a sobber like me, weeping at the drop of a hat or more reserved in your crying like my Dad. Because not only is there a holy precedent but also there really are some things that are worth crying about and hope of a better and brighter future is one of them.
