Paavo Jarvi conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra

Paavo Jarvi conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto, with Benjamin Grosvenor, and Mozart's 'Jupiter' Symphony.

From the 2020 成人快手 Proms, another chance to hear Benjamin Grosvenor perform Shostakovich鈥檚 First Piano Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Paavo Jarvi, bookended by Ravel鈥檚 neo-baroque masterpiece Le tombeau de Couperin and Mozart鈥檚 titanic Symphony No 41.

The sophisticated, transfigured baroque dances of Ravel鈥檚 Le tombeau de Couperin offset Shostakovich鈥檚 boisterous Piano Concerto No 1, with its cheeky sprinkling of quotations from classical giants Beethoven and Haydn among others.

These two works of neo-baroque and neo-classical influences are followed by Mozart鈥檚 final symphony, the 鈥楯upiter鈥, a high point of the 鈥榯rue鈥 classical-period canon. Nicknamed posthumously for its majestic first movement and epic finale, the work is a summation of Mozart鈥檚 entire symphonic output with its unique blend of grandeur and subtlety.

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.
