Good morning. Today is the International Day of Peace, which was established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution. But what is Peace Day? According to the UN, Peace Day 鈥減rovides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.鈥
That鈥檚 a great description which manages to pack so much into a few simple words.聽
It talks about building peace, and I think the mental picture that conjures up is very important. Peace isn鈥檛 a passive state; it is far more than a simple absence of conflict. Like building a house, it鈥檚 hard work! It鈥檚 something that we have to work at actively and intentionally, identifying prejudices and attitudes that cause division and striving to overcome them through costly humility and deliberate reconciliation.
聽In fact, the description talks about building a culture of peace, helping us to understand that the aim is to create a global society where peace and reconciliation are the norm rather than the exception.
The description also uses the word commit. This is an important reminder that peace and reconciliation aren鈥檛 one-off events. Maintaining a culture of peace is going to require a lifelong commitment, a stubborn determination to keep waging peace rather than waging war, and reconciliation over revenge.
Finally, the description calls for all humanity 鈥 to contribute to this process of building a culture of peace. Peace making isn鈥檛 just a responsibility for governments 鈥 organisations at all levels, and perhaps most especially individuals, must be committed to actively building peace between themselves and their neighbours. Building peace is a job for us all.
Lord Jesus,You taught your followers that peace makers would be blessed, because they were the true children of God, reflecting his character through their costly acts of forgiveness and reconciliation.聽 Help us all, not just on International Peace Day but every day, to be willing to commit to the task of building a culture of peace 鈥 both in our local neighbourhood as well as the world at large, in whichever ways are open to us, Amen.
