Script

Good morning.

This week, I鈥檓 marking the season of creation with reflections on that great Psalm of creation, Psalm 104. It speaks not only of the creatures and contours of the world, but also of its produce, its bounty, its gifts that both sustain and delight. Here are some verses:

You make the grass to grow for the cattle
and plants to serve human needs;
that they may bring forth bread from the earth
and wine to cheer the heart;
oil, to make faces shine,
and bread to strengthen the heart.

The psalm even goes on to sing of how the trees drink their fill: the earth鈥檚 produce is not only for its moving creatures. We all know that food is more than fuel and our relationship to the produce of the earth changes considerably when we see it not as a component in a machine but as a part of that rich diversity of living things of which we are also a part.

We鈥檙e invited to look beyond the functional aspects of our food and drink, to the joy they bring us. So as this day unfolds, we might take moments to savour each mouthful, to enjoy tastes and textures, perhaps even to linger over one of the many times we now make sure to wash our hands, being grateful even for the gifts of soap and water, for they too are of the earth.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!
Fill us, O God, with gratitude and with joy
for each of the good things we will savour this day.
Gladden our hearts, enlighten our minds
and strengthen our bodies as this new day unfolds.聽 Amen.
