Rewind to the year 2005, when YouTube launches with its first video and Andy Murray makes his Wimbledon debut.

A group of Drumchapel high school girls campaign against the detention of asylum seekers after their friend Agnesa was arrested by police and put in a detention centre, with the group becoming known as The Glasgow Girls.

After a delay of 24 hours due to the death of Pope John Paul II, Prince Charles marries Camilla Parker Bowles. In Scotland, the Civil Partnership Act becomes law, giving same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual married couples.

In politics, Michael Howard resigns as Conservative leader and is replaced by David Cameron. As the G8 summit prepares to take place in Scotland, riots occur in Edinburgh. To coincide with G8 and the 20th anniversary of Live Aid, Live 8 is staged across the world, with ten simultaneous events culminating in a concert attended by 50,000 fans at Murrayfield.

On 6th July, London is announced as host of the 2012 Olympic Games, but the celebrations are silenced the next day when 52 people are killed in a series of bomb attacks in London.

Hurricane Katrina makes landfall at New Orleans, causing major floods and killing almost 2,000 people. The city is devastated, with millions displaced and anger at the slow response from President Bush.
