Dandy Brandy, Tractor Nostalgia and Taraxacology

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

This weekend should have been the start of the practice races for the Isle of Man TT. But because of Coronavirus they鈥檝e been cancelled and instead a virtual Isle of Man TT Esports event will take place in June. We look back at Mark and Euan鈥檚 experience of the TT track on a motor trike when we visited the island last year.

Our daily exercise piece this week comes from former colleague Jo De Sylva who goes exploring around Inverness.

We go all nostalgic on Out of Doors as Euan waxes lyrical about his 鈥淟ittle Grey Fergie鈥 with some poetic input from Mark and a listener.

The windy weather in the North East over the last week prompted Mark to think about wind and its different uses and how it behaves.

Euan takes us on a bike ride around his local stomping ground of Banffshire and delves into some of the historical place names and tales attached to them.

We hear from John Lunn from SportScotland about what phase one of the Scottish Government鈥檚 Coronavirus route map means for spending time doing outdoor activities.

A couple of years ago Mark learnt a bit about taraxacology, the study of dandelions from Dr Leslie Tucker in Perthshire. We hear a little bit of that interview before the team try out Helen Needham鈥檚 Dandy Brandy flavoured, funnily enough, by dandelions!

We are joined live on the line by James Withers, chief executive of Scotland Food and Drink to tell us about how the industry has had to adapt during the pandemic and how consumers are embracing buying local produce.

Euan has another mystery sound for us but this week it isn鈥檛 a bird, can you identify the strange noise?

And we have an excerpt from our special midweek podcast published on Wednesday which features TV presenter Philippa Forester. She chats to Mark and Euan about her passion for wolves from her home in Wyoming, USA.
