The legendary Steve Earle joins Bob from his home in New York to play some songs from his new album "Ghosts of West Virginia", which is out tomorrow.
The album features songs that Steve wrote for the stage play "Coal Country", which had a truncated run in New York in early March. It's about the 2010 Upper Big Branch mining disaster in West Virginia, which killed 29 men. Steve appeared in the play himself, singing seven of the songs from the album, a new departure for the musician - famously an American liberal - who challenged himself to write songs that would embrace and sympathize with people who may not agree with him politically.

Steve Earle is an American rock, country and folk singer-songwriter, record producer, author and actor. He began his career as a songwriter in Nashville and released his first EP in 1982.

His breakthrough album was the 1986 album Guitar Town. Since then Earle has released 15 studio albums and received three Grammy awards. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Levon Helm, The Highwaymen, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Shawn Colvin, Bob Seger, and Emmylou Harris. He has appeared in film and television, and has written a novel, a play, and a book of short stories.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when so many musicians are unable to tour, Radio 2's Country Show is asking artists to perform from their own front room, doing a little to keep the bond between artist and audience alive. First up was Carly Pearce, followed by Thomas Rhett, Mandy Barnett, and Gretchen Peters with the likes of Willie Jones, Kip Moore and Scotty McCreery to come.
