A reflection and prayer to start the day with Jonathan Rea

PRAYER FOR THE DAY Tuesday 28 April 2020
Good morning
听
I was shocked when my mother announced that she wanted to join a social network, just 3 days after declaring she would never do such a thing.
Her aim was singular 鈥 she wanted to see church services during the lockdown.
听
Now I don鈥檛 know if you鈥檝e ever tried teaching technology remotely, when the person you鈥檙e speaking to only has one phone available to them, and they鈥檙e trying to have a video call with you, at the same time as learning how to operate a new app. It was pure torture for us both.
听
For a couple of days, a speech bubble was known as, 鈥渢he wee black blob in the corner鈥, and it took ages to decipher the thing that she said looked like the paw of a dog, but was in fact a graphic of a small group of people.
听
Then came the challenge of finding the things she wanted, without seeing the things she had no interest in. And soon she realised to her horror that other people could find her.
听
But three weeks on, she鈥檚 really into the swing of it. She鈥檚 attending church services in many different locations, from the comfort of her own living room.
She鈥檚 liking, commenting and seeing people鈥檚 news.
And last weekend she found some friends of mine, and together they ganged up on me during a live broadcast on social media.
听
The loss of real life interaction is a huge deal. But these days, I am thankful for technological lifelines that limit our sense of isolation and enlarge our world.
听
Thank you Lord for the inventive spirit of those who have developed technology which makes us feel less alone. But we also pray earnestly that it won鈥檛 be long, before we can go back to seeing the people we love properly - in person. Amen
