Sir Mark Elder conducts The Hall茅 Orchestra in a concert of English music recorded last night at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, including Elgar's Enigma Variations and Vaughan Williams's visionary Ninth Symphony. Between those two giants of orchestral music, one of the great what-ifs of music history: George Butterworth. What could he have later achieved had he not been killed in the First World War? Baritone Roderick Williams sings Butterworth's Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad in the singer's own orchestration of this powerful and beautiful work. Presented by Tom McKinney.
