The Philharmonia plays Mahler and Schumann

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia in Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn, with soprano Lise Davidsen and baritone Christopher Maltman, and Schumann's 'Rhenish' Symphony.

Award-winning Norwegian soprano-of-the-moment, Lise Davidsen sings alongside leading British baritone Christopher Maltman in a selection from Des Knaben Wunderhorn ('The Youth's Magic Horn'), Mahler’s wonderfully evocative and colourful collection of songs based on German folk poetry.

As with one of those songs, 'Rheinlegendchen', the Rhine is the inspiration for Schumann’s third symphony, the ‘Rhenish’. The result of a happy holiday to the Rhineland with his wife Clara, the music ranges from the majestic swagger of the horn-dominated first movement through to the awe-inspiring solemnity of the fourth, and the exhilarating fifth.

Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia begin their concert with 'Blumine', a lyrical off-cut from Mahler's first symphony.

Presented by Martin Handley, live from the Royal Festival Hall.
