Script:
Good morning. When I was a child, Aladdin was one of my favourite stories, and I never tired of hearing the bit where the genie comes out of the lamp and offers him three wishes. My sister and I would spend hours debating what we would ask for. Now I鈥檓 an adult, I know what I would wish for聽 鈥 more time.聽Well, the good news is that today is a leap day, so we do have an extra 24 hours at our disposal. My rational mind knows that the leap days come round every four years, but somehow this extra day still seems like a gift.聽What, I wonder, are we going to do with it?聽 Something tells me that it would be wrong to take it for granted. Perhaps we could decide to do something life-affirming like dancing a little when nobody鈥檚 watching and maybe even if they are, reading a poem or walking in the park even if it鈥檚 raining. Or maybe we could use today to do something life-changing, like taking the first step to repair a broken relationship or reaching out to initiate a new friendship. That way, the effects of this leap day may well last far beyond these 24 hours.
The truth is of course that every day is a gift. We don鈥檛 earn or request our days, they are given to us, and it is up to us what we make of them. 鈥淲ho of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?鈥, asks Jesus. And 鈥淭each us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom鈥, pleads the psalmist.
God of time and eternity, you give us the gift of life. Each day is a new start, with each sunrise offering endless possibilities. Help us on this leap day, and every day, to be surprised by flashes of your loving joy in the people we meet and the situations we live through. Amen.
