A short reflection and prayer with the Rev Dr Bert Tosh.

Script - Rev Dr Bert Tosh
Good morning. I was at a friend鈥檚 wedding once and when the festivities were over I was asked to give a lift to an aunt of his. I asked if she鈥檇 enjoyed the day. Her reply was terse as for she told me the whole event had been spoilt by the best man. I was surprised for his speech hadn鈥檛 contained anything likely to cause annoyance or embarrassment to maiden aunts.聽
But before I got the chance to ask what the problem had been, she told me 鈥渉e was wearing brown shoes鈥. Now I hadn鈥檛 noticed what sort of shoes he鈥檇 been wearing but she went on: 鈥淎 man who doesn鈥檛 know better than to wear brown shoes at a wedding is unfit to be a best man鈥. Well, there was no answer to that.聽
Now I never saw the lady again and I鈥檓 quite sure she got over it- eventually. But in a rather silly sort of way it was an interesting insight into how, very wrongfully and unhelpfully, we form impressions of people by their appearance. It might be the colour of their skin or the sort of clothes they鈥檙e wearing, if they have lot of tattoos or even if they鈥檙e using a wheelchair.
There鈥檚 a story in the Old Testament about Samuel being sent to run his eye over possible candidates among the sons of Jesse for the position of King of Israel. When one ccaught Samuel鈥檚 eye and made a good impression, God said, 鈥淒on鈥檛 pay attention to how tall and handsome he is. I do not judge as man judges- man looks at the outward appearance but I look at the heart.鈥澛
God looks at the heart. That鈥檚 something of a turn up for our normal way of looking at people. It means that the superficial judgements we make can never really tell us the truth about them.聽
Lord help us to look at others as you see them Amen.
