Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
The winter break has been a great time to watch an old film or catch up with a favourite box set.聽 An old trick to keep the audience interested is the cliff-hanger. Just as the story鈥檚 getting exciting, the music starts and we have to wait for the next episode to find out what happens. Streaming has changed things a bit, but anyone of my age will recall watching Dr Who 鈥 as the doctor was about to be mangled by an alien, the music started and it was all over for another week.
The cliff-hanger was invented long before Dr Who. The first is read in every synagogue in the world at this time of year; it鈥檚 in the book of Genesis. Joseph (of Technicolour Dreamcoat fame) has risen to become the ruler of ancient Egypt. His brothers, who had sold him into slavery years before and believe him dead, come to Egypt to buy food as there鈥檚 a famine back at home. Joseph recognises them, but they have no idea who he is. He gives them food to take home but plants a chalice in one of his brother鈥檚 bags. The apparent thief is discovered soon after they leave Egypt and the brothers are dragged back to face the music. But just as the story is reaching its denouement, the reader in the synagogue simply stops 鈥 it鈥檚 a cliff-hanger.
In the next instalment, read this Saturday 鈥 we hear that Joseph could no longer conceal his identity, how he was reconciled with his brothers and what happened next to their family. Apart from encouraging people to come back to synagogue, the cliff-hanger also makes a profound point 鈥 the story of Joseph鈥檚 family, like the story of society, has two distinct phases: fragmentation and dispute, then compromise and harmony.
Today, the last day of the year, is a cliff-hanger moment. 2019 has been an angry and difficult year in the UK; there鈥檚 been harsh public discourse and painful rifts have been exposed. But a new year offers us new hope. We can perpetuate divisions or commit to healing; we can continue to label and accuse each other or take steps towards creating a more forgiving and harmonious society. It鈥檚 up to all of us to write a better, second half of our story as 2020 begins. Happy New Year!
