Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:

This time every year I am filled with rituals, habits and intention that will help to shape the year ahead. I spend hours looking for journals and gratitude diaries that market themselves as the tools needed to help mould the best version of you.

This is one of the two times of the year I allocate myself a stationery allowance because what is a new you without a glitter pen, highlighter and tracker system to remind you of how many glasses of water you should be drinking in a day.
I also spend a lot of times thinking about the resolutions I didn’t keep and imagine where I would be now if only I had kept up or cut down.
Last year after listening to Tolly T, one of the hosts of a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ sounds Podcast, I decided I would introduce another ritual into my new year customs, and this one Zoe, I’ve managed to stick to.
What she advised was to get an empty jar, and every time you accomplish something big or small, write it down and add it to the jar, and whenever you are feeling down, pull a few out to remind yourself of how well you are doing.
At low moments throughout the year, this has been a remedy for me and my friends who I persuaded to do the same.

Last week, me and those same friends decided to have a celebratory dinner and to share all of our accomplishments.

The candles flickered, music was playing in the background and one by one we read from our pile of notes which had our accomplishments written down in glittered pen.

As a tight-knit group, I knew all of their accomplishments and they knew mine, but there was something extra sweet about sharing them together.  I realised celebrating the accomplishments of others was as satisfactory as hearing my own. In that space I felt safe, I felt free.

Imam Ali a companion of the Prophet Muhammed said

“The Poor is one who does not have any friends, he is like a stranger in his own land".

I didn’t consider how enriched and at home I feel with my friends.

A lesson I will be taking into 2020 is often times the best accomplishments include those who love us.
