Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

The drama in my family this week has been choosing a new sofa. Sounds simple... but our family's had some special karma with sofas for as long as I can remember.

Sometimes it really is a happy relationship for a few years. But the telltale signs start to appear. A little sag, a little fray. Before long we start making excuses for it and perfecting the art of nip and tuck when guests come round - you know...strategic cushion placing, filling in the deep gouges you could accidentally get lost in!

What's most ridiculous is the whole time this is happening we're saying how we should get rid of it. I can go away for half a year with promises that when I come back it will be gone, but I know when I get back, it's gonna be looking innocently up at me, 'like, who me? But they said I could stay...!'

One sofa back in our furniture timeline, my Dad and brother decided to take matters into their own hands. They got two axes and smashed it apart in the living room listening to thrash metal. It burned ceremoniously in the back garden...

聽So as I help my mum look for a new one I've been thinking about why letting go is so hard. No matter how broken down something's become, it's comfortable. Change means committing energy and time to what comes in its place. And much as I ridicule how long that takes, I look at my life and wonder how many metaphorical broken sofas I've held onto in my mind. In the past few weeks I've faced some feelings of loss and fear and noticed old ways of thinking surfacing - patterns I thought I left behind long ago.

My Dad's often told me - 'it's easy to say no, for a higher yes'. We ended up buying a brand new sofa and it was that bit easier to take out the old one. As frightening as change can be, I'm trying to focus on the state of mind that I really want. In yoga it's called a sankalpa - a positive intention. It's something to hold onto for strength and courage, especially when it's time to change and grow. 聽'it's easy to say no, for a higher yes'.
