Ken Bruce talks to Bruce Welch OBE, founding member of Britain’s most successful instrumental group The Shadows, about his favourite records.
Bruce was born in Bognor Regis in Sussex but spent most of his early years in County Durham. Aged just 14 he formed his first skiffle group with a school friend – Hank Marvin. Hank and Bruce performed under the name the Geordie Boys and as members of the Five Chesternuts. It was after a performance at Soho’s famous 2i’s coffee bar that they were asked to join Cliff Richard’s backing band – the Drifters who later renamed themselves the Shadows. As a composer Bruce is responsible for a whole string of hits including – Foot Tapper, The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt, In the Country and Summer Holiday. Along with the Shadows he appeared in Cliff’s films – The Young Ones, Summer Holiday, Wonderful Life, Finders Keepers and represented the UK at the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest with Let Me Be The One coming in second behind the Netherlands with Ding A Dong. Classic hits by the Shadows are featured on a new compilation “Dreamboats and Petticoats.
