Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
Over the years I鈥檝e witnessed the many sides of both success and failure up close. I鈥檝e seen talented people fulfil their dreams and just as many who failed to do so.
I鈥檝e seen good people go to prison and I鈥檝e been inspired by criminals who reformed their lives.
The secret to success is that there is no secret. Success results from hard work, perseverance, and the ability to learn from failures.
聽I agree with C.S.Lewis that failures can be 鈥榝inger posts on the road to achievement.鈥
Years ago I was asked to escort a prisoner, on temporary leave, to meet his family for the first time in twenty years; his parents were now elderly but had supported him during his years behind bars.聽
As we walked the short distance to my car, I was shocked by how weak he was. He could barely put one foot past another. If I hadn鈥檛 linked him he would have toppled over.
In the car park he was mesmerised by shapes of the cars. They were unrecognisable to him because every car had changed utterly whilst he was inside. On the journey there were times when he wanted to jump out of the car; the speed at which cars now travelled frightened him. When we arrived at his parents鈥 house he panicked; he simply could not cross the road as the cars flew by.
When I brought him back to jail two days later, he couldn鈥檛 wait to get through the gates. He had become totally institutionalised.聽
He asked me why I bothered with him now. 鈥淚鈥檓 a failure, a no-good criminal,鈥 he told me, 鈥淵ou have better things to do than waste time with me.鈥
I told him the truth. At first it was duty. Then it was pity and now it was because I could just get a glimpse of a decent man, who made mistakes, paid his dues and was valiantly struggling to readjust.聽
Three years later I officiated at his wedding. He lived a good life. Last June he died peacefully surrounded by his wife and two sons. They loved him dearly.
Now there鈥檚 a man who learned from his mistakes. Nobody is beyond redemption.
