Pause For Though

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Today, in 2008, America elected its first ever black President. Regardless of political affiliation, there can be no underestimating the importance of the election of Barack Obama, given American history.

Close to 13 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic as slaves, millions more dying on the way. For 400 years, humans were traded like cattle because of the colour of their skin. Every right given to blacks in America 鈥 including the right to vote 鈥 had to be fought for.

And yet, finally, here was a black president.聽聽

On Saturday, I watched the Rugby World Cup, and whilst I was sad to see England lose 鈥 especially after the masterful win against New Zealand last week, I was absolutely thrilled to see South African Captain, Siya Kolisi, lift the World Cup. Despite being an African nation, Kolisi is the first ever Black captain of the South African team.

Regardless of sporting allegiance, there can be no underestimating the significance of Kolisi鈥檚 captaincy.

The South African Rugby Team had been seen as an integral part of Apartheid, and literally hated by the vast majority of Black South Africans, who suffered Apartheid鈥檚 racist oppression. Nelson Mandela鈥檚 donning of a Green and Gold rugby jersey in the 1995 World Cup, which South Africa also won, led the way for healing, and ultimately Kolisi鈥檚 leadership.

Despite these historic moments that signify that racism can be overcome, and which give me hope, I remain ever vigilant.

This week, in this country, an investigation by a leading UK broadcaster found that racist abuse had TRIPLED against NHS staff in just a few short years.

The report found that NHS employees are subject to abuse at all levels. With senior non-white consultants explaining how they are asked, 'Can I have a white doctor for the operation?', leaving them devastated, demoralised, and questioning their own self-worth.聽

聽The Prophet Muhammad extolled, 鈥淭he white is not superior over the black, nor is the black superior over the white,鈥 and for me, my brain cannot compute how someone can judge another person based on the amount of melanin in their body. However, racism continues to exist, lurking like a virus that can never quite be eradicated.

So, despite symbolic and significant wins, such as the first black presidency, or the first black captaincy, I believe that we must never be complacent in the fight against racism.
