Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Paul Oxley, vicar of St Mark鈥檚 in Milton Keynes:

Last week we had my girls鈥 school harvest assembly. Still awaiting West-End fame, my daughters currently make do with stage blocks and scenery hung on PE wall apparatus.

Having practised their songs for weeks, they performed with enthusiastic pizzazz; something which can鈥檛 quite be said for the boys on the back row! 听

I know for a fact that those boys had attended numerous rehearsals, but鈥o watch them you鈥檇 think a passing UFO had dropped them in the playground without explaining what a school hall looked like, what the dickens Harvest is about, or what the words to any of the songs might be!

Mumbling through the songs, desperately hoping to stumble upon the correct words鈥 totally felt their pain! I feel like that all the time!

I don鈥檛 know the correct words to describe the haircut I want in the barbers.

I never think of a winning point in an argument until long after the event.

I can鈥檛 explain to my kids what makes a joke funny.听 I can鈥檛 converse with taxi drivers about anything other than hi-bred fuel economy.
I鈥檓 at a total loss to know what to say to mates struck by grief, and I have a nagging anxiety about tomorrow which is impossible to articulate.

Sometimes I try and pray about this stuff, which has to burst out of me at some point鈥ut when I do, honestly, I struggle to find the words then too.

A couple of Fridays ago when Elbow were in the studio, after one of his songs, Zoe you said to Guy Garvey 鈥渁s a human you want to express yourself in so many ways, but we don鈥檛 need to cos Guy, you do it for us.鈥

You reminded me of a biblical poet who once wrote, 鈥渂efore a word is on my tongue, you know it completely O God鈥. That poet was amazed that God might hear, understand, and bless the mumbled prayers of someone like me who lacks so much in expression or faith.

This beauty opens the Divine up to anyone, from poets to tongue-tied blokes in barber chairs, which I think, to those of us who know what it鈥檚 like to not be OK, is good news. 听
