The perfect classical half hour

Amina Alaoui sings fado, there's tragic music from Verdi, and upbeat music from Bach. Gesualdo provides darkness, Fanny Mendelssohn joy and Eric Coates the bustle of 1930s London.

The Moroccan-born singer Amina Alaoui sings Fado Al-Mu'tamid from her album Arco Iris. Before that we hear the fingers of pianist Nikolai Lugansky flying through Liszt's Feux-follets, and we start with tragedy in the form of the overture to Act 3 of Verdi's La Traviata. Some lively music for string quartet from Fanny Mendelssohn follows Amina Alaoui singing fado, then we sink into the darkness of Gesualdo's Tenebrae. Some upbeat Bach cleanses the palate, and we end in the bustling heart of Covent Garden, part of Eric Coates's London Suite from the 1930s.
