Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:

I wanna go home.

听My heart has gone out to all the Thomas Cook passengers who have had to be repatriated this week. Listening to all the sad stories on the news broadcasts I have been struck time and again by people expressing deep desperation to get home. Sometimes it takes a crisis to realise just how important home is to us.听 As the Beach Boys put it: 鈥淲ell I feel so broke up 鈥 I wanna go home鈥

听I remember a time in my own life where I felt like that. Twenty-two years ago I found myself鈥 along with 200 other British nationals - waiting to be repatriated. The country I was working in had seen a sudden violent civil uprising and we were taken in convoy to the docks to await helicopter evacuation. But with the staccato of automatic gunfire resounding along the beachfront, it became far too dangerous for aircraft to land. We waited fearfully all day and then all night and saw the sunrise of the next morning. I began to understand what it might feel like to be a refugee. I just wanted to be somewhere I could call home.

听That experience affected me profoundly. I now lead a charity that helps foster children who are victims of violence, abuse and neglect and also unaccompanied asylum seeking children who both find themselves in desperate need of somewhere to call home.

听My faith has played a critical part in this too. Hours before Jesus was killed on a cross outside Jerusalem, he explained to his disciples that there was purpose to his suffering. He said: 鈥淚n my Father鈥檚 house are many rooms. I am going there to prepare a place for you鈥. At its heart Christianity is the invitation to come home to God. I believe we can mirror this invitation in our own lives, preparing to offer homes to those who in times of uncertainty and chaos urgently need one.

听I might not have been here today if twenty-two years ago the Italian Navy hadn鈥檛 braved the gunfire and shipped us all away to safety. We were swiftly herded into crude landing gear that felt like floating skips and then taken to a naval frigate in the Adriatic. Sitting on the metallic floor of its lower deck we were treated to a meal of salted sourdough bread. I have to say that was one of the best meals I have ever been served. It meant I was on my way home.
