Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

So last week, I broke down in tears whilst delivering my Pause for Thought.

As a Brit, brought up by a Stoic, I tend to favour a 鈥渟tiff-upper-lip鈥 approach to life, so I鈥檒l confess to feeling rather embarrassed by this momentary lapse of composure. As someone who鈥檒l tell you 鈥淚鈥檓 good鈥 or 鈥淚鈥檓 fine鈥 鈥 when asked 鈥淗ow are you?鈥; crying on live radio left me somewhat mortified.

My embarrassment however was tempered by so many warm messages. Perfect strangers reached out to check up on me, and to tell me their stories of how past Pauses had helped them in a dark place in their life.

I felt so humbled and so healed by these acts of human kindness. I was able to admit to them, and to myself, that perhaps I am not as fine as I could be, or even as fine as I should be.

Being a person of faith does not make me immune to dark thoughts. However, my faith does call on me to focus on The Light, reminding me to be ever hopeful; and to look at what God considers successful. To look at my life through Heaven鈥檚 eyes.

The allures of this world are not part of God鈥檚 view of success according to the Qur鈥檃n. Success is not measured in how much money we have, how fancy our homes, or how many degrees, or accolades we collect. Not that any of these things matter to me, if I am honest!

Nor is success to be found in our children or spouses 鈥 things which really do matter to me.

Rather the Qur鈥檃n describes those who have striven hard in the cause of goodness, those who are patient in adversity, and those who remember God 鈥 these are successful people.

The Qur鈥檃n is also very clear about not losing hope. To despair of God鈥檚 Love and Mercy is tantamount to rejecting God.

Faith doesn鈥檛 give me all the answers. Faith can鈥檛 cure my daughter after seven long years of illness-through every relapse and remission. Faith won鈥檛 get my work done, or rid my body of sometimes disabling exhaustion, but keeping faith with God means never giving up, and being content with every test which gets sent our way. And as such, I am truly happy to remain faithful to faith.

And also very grateful for people鈥檚 kindness along the way!
