Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:聽
My middle daughter has two birthdays. Not because she is training to be the Queen - although she would make a very good one. But because she is adopted. We celebrate the day she entered the world 鈥 with the significant help of her biological mother 鈥 and we also celebrate the day in September that she became part of our family 鈥 legally, permanently and irrevocably. All dressed up in our Sunday best even though it was a Tuesday afternoon, the adoption celebration hearing in court was a day I will never forget. Our older children鈥檚 headmaster had authorised their day鈥檚 absence for the occasion and various social workers turned up looking nervous 鈥 which made me nervous too.聽
By the end of the morning we were a family of six 鈥 with a certificate stamped by the judge to prove it. Then we all went out for pizza and icecream (in the reverse order) to begin our new life together. Looking back that day was the highlight of an otherwise difficult year. I had been effectively dismissed from my workplace and was in the middle of adjusting to a new job 鈥 which had meant a new house and a new school for the children. My mother was wrestling with a terminal cancer diagnosis, and as for my faith 鈥 I was hanging on by my fingernails. But adopting my foster daughter affected me profoundly. It was becoming an adoptive father myself that helped me understand something new about God. I hadn鈥檛 realised it before but adoption is at the heart of the Christian faith.聽
When I became a Christian God became my heavenly Father, not by default, but by choice. Not because he had to, but because he wanted to. Not because he needed another child but because I needed a heavenly father. Not because of anything I have done, but because of everything Jesus did. This deep truth has reshaped my entire understanding of the Christian faith. So now I have two birthdays too. The one when I entered the world 鈥 with significant help from my late mother. And the one when I became adopted into God鈥檚 family 鈥 permanently and irrevocably. We don鈥檛 always celebrate with pizza and ice-cream 鈥 although, come to think of it, that鈥檚 not such a bad idea!
