Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:
I know it might be controversial, but as a child as much as I loved the summer holidays, I looked forward most to the month of September. As the teacher handed out those pristine new exercise books I felt like the reset button had been pressed. I can clearly bring to mind the smoothness of the pages - and that smell! If only someone could recreate it in the form of a scented candle! I for one would readily pay for the aroma of a clean start. As I got older those Septembers would often be marked with a new wardrobe, a fresh haircut, or a funkier pair of glasses.聽
One time I redesigned my desk with a pot plant to inspire me for the year. Another time I surrounded myself with posters of obscure French films I had never seen. And once I even changed my name 鈥 from Krishna to Krish. These were all ploys to remind myself to live up to the new slate I had been given. Someone once said: 鈥淣o matter where you go 鈥 there you are鈥. The problem with the annual fresh starts is that they are only temporary. It never took long before even those most beautiful exercise books were spoiled with red crosses, ink spots and crossings out. How I would long then for September to come round again. In the Christian gospels, there is an episode recorded where Jesus offers an old man a new start.聽
To Nicodemus he said: 鈥淵ou must be born again if you want to see the Kingdom of Heaven鈥. It was an odd thing to say, but Jesus seems to suggest that the old man needs more than a moral makeover or a an ethical reboot. Turning over a new leaf is not enough 鈥 he is telling Nicodemus God is offering him a brand new life. One of the defining features the Christian faith has to offer is that no matter who we are or what we have done, there is always the opportunity for a new beginning with God. This is great news for someone like me, who constantly fails to live up even to my own good intentions. As the children come home from school this week with those neat first pages of their exercise books, I am reminded to make a bit of extra effort in the various disciplines of my life. And maybe this year, September can be the month for real new beginnings for me.
