Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:Ìý
I always thought the point of a bank holiday was to relax, to have a slow start, maybe indulge in a fry-up, then generally laze around for the day. But on May bank holiday this year, my wife took a different approach – a clear-out and a visit to the local recycling centre: that was what was needed. Dutifully, I complied. The car was packed to within an inch of its life and we set off …. only to discover that most other people in the area had the same idea. We ended up in a bank holiday queue of hell for a full hour, waiting to get into the centre. Now, as my wife knows, I’m not good with queues of traffic at the best of times.Ìý
So, I surely must have earned a month of Brownie points that day for not turning around and heading home. ‘Feels great to get shut of it though, doesn’t it, babe’, Pat triumphantly proclaimed. And actually, science supports her: tests repeatedly show that decluttering reduces stress, increases wellbeing, even improves physical health (although, I did also find a study that said a messy desk can make you more creative – which I confess I really liked!) When I think about it, a lot of my life as a priest is about helping people to get rid of clutter – not the sort we take to the rubbish tip, more the kind that gets lodged in the mind and soul and gnaws away at confidence and self-worth. Guilt is by far the most common item of inner clutter I help people to dump.Ìý
Yes, there are certainly times when it is appropriate to sense guilt – especially when we hurt people or behave as if our needs and feelings are more important than anyone else’s. But as I remind myself: we are only human and it’s through mistakes and blunders that we learn and grow. The trick, as I see it, lies in acknowledging the blunders, doing whatever we can to rectify them, then moving on. That said, I believe an enormous amount of the guilt we carry isn’t guilt at all but feelings of not measuring up to the expectations of others – and that really is pointless clutter to dump, this bank holiday Monday.
