Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:
Last week, my wife Pat and I celebrated our birthdays 鈥 they鈥檙e a day apart. I asked what she鈥檇 like to do for hers. Unsurprisingly, she wanted to go to the sea. Pat loves the sea. Not swimming in it (maybe a paddle); more wave-gazing. In the strong wind at Chesil beach in Dorset we saw a fisherman almost swept away by a wave as he cast his line hopefully into the tempest. The wind wasn鈥檛 cold so we sat on a mound at a safe distance 鈥 still feeling the spray on our faces. In the car on the way back, Pat had the choice of music 鈥 her favourite Queen album with the song 鈥楾oo Much Love Can Kill You鈥 which reminds us of a dear Australian friend Peter who used to listen to it in our lounge with tears rolling down his cheeks. 鈥楶lay it again, Dave鈥, he鈥檇 say鈥hen weep some more.聽
Back at the cottage, Pat pottered in the garden while I wrote. Then we ended the day watching a bit of TV after dinner. And I was reminded that, often, it is simple stuff that really makes us happy 鈥 especially when shared with friends. I鈥檝e been thinking about the soul lately. Even as a priest and theologian, I still don鈥檛 really know what that means. But I suspect it refers to my deepest, truest, best self which I sometimes lose sight of in the craziness of trying to survive in the world. I don鈥檛 think souls are fed by spending pots of money, trying to outdo everyone, or plain looking after number one.聽
I believe souls are fed (we become the person we truly long to be) through the kind of things we did on Pat鈥檚 birthday 鈥 pausing to feast on nature, spending time with people we love, being grateful for simple stuff we generally take for granted, attending to the needs of others. Oh, and for Pat, Freddie Mercury is also soul food. Me, I鈥檓 more of a Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds kind of man 鈥 but that鈥檚 for another day. This one was hers.
