Pause For Thought
Well, Amol, A-Level results in England and Wales were revealed last Thursday, and today here it’s the GCSEs! Now when the Miles family lived in Essex, our home backed onto a secondary school, which was very handy when our kids were teenagers: they didn’t have to leave home until the bell rang! Brilliant. Living so close, I can remember the commotion every August as students opened the dreaded envelopes to reveal their results: the joyous shrieks, followed by loads of hugging. Yet, my heart always went out to those clearly devastated and crestfallen amid the rowdy and preoccupied majority.Â
Bless ‘em, a few sensitive souls would notice their anguish and extend a consoling arm or whisper words of sympathy. But what to say? Well, last week, the Archbishop of Canterbury tweeted a wise truth: ‘Albert Einstein’, he said, ‘failed his history, geography and language exams. Your grades don’t define your ability.’ I like that! Today is the anniversary of a mathematician in 1736 declaring that the world was to end a few months later that same year. Well, ‘surprise surprise’, it didn’t! And failing exams isn’t the end of the world either. In fact, you’re listening to ‘The Rev’ who got the lowest grade in his R.E. exams at school.
Sir Richard Branson once declared that failure should be seen a lesson, ‘use that learning’ he said, ‘to improve your chances of success when you try again. Failure is only the end if you decide to stop.’ Good advice, but let’s be honest, a lecture probably isn’t what you need when you’re feeling the pain. What I needed back in 1979 was someone to come alongside me; pick me up gently, accept me for who I am, and have faith in my potential. Christians believe that’s how God is for people when they don’t make the grade in whatever situation – with the offer of a fresh start! So, on this ‘mixed emotion Thursday’, I’m going to pray for everyone on cloud nine and those feeling down in the dumps. Remembering a verse in the Bible: ‘Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.’
