Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
As part of my normal ministry, I spend a considerable amount of time in hospitals. I was reflecting on this recently. I came to the conclusion that sitting in the waiting room outside the Intensive Care Unit was like nowhere else on earth. It was amazing how people came together in a way that was genuinely uplifting. Family members and friends couldn't do enough for one another. They put others first, no-one stood on ceremony or protocol. They shared their troubles and gave progress reports on their relatives.听
We all got to know medical terms and symptoms we had no interest in a few hours before. Differences melted away. Differences of creed or class just didn鈥檛 matter. In times of suffering we seem to learn to see people as they are. At another time and place there could have been a temptation to be distracted by colour, status or religion; but not in this waiting room. It opened my eyes to the goodness that lies just beneath the surface in most of us. It was inspiring to see how quickly people listened with genuine compassion and offered to pray for the family whose mother was close to departing this world.听
On the other hand a family's good news brought joy to everyone in the room. The medics joined in too. Cups of tea, kind words and time, helped to ease the suffering of both the relatives and the patients. In a hospital waiting room, it seems to me, the world changes. Maybe it's because at that point we face the reality that life is fragile and can disappear in an instant. Every moment of life becomes precious. Furthermore, the troubles that worried us yesterday ceased to be a problem in this life-and-death situation.听
The Intensive Care waiting room was, ironically a place of hope. And for that reason it made me grateful for the many blessings I have. Most of all it made me realise that life itself is a waiting room. Yet there鈥檚 no need to have regrets. Good days bring happiness; bad days bring experience.
