Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

I got back from New York just a few weeks ago and immediately on my return I was attending two weddings - as you do, this time of year. Right after that we were to head down to Cornwall and visit my grandmother who鈥檇 been very ill and seemed to be steadily declining. We were driving along the M5 In the heatwave and stopped at Exeter where we got a call that she might pass that night. And that she did, after we鈥檇 all said our goodbyes and how much we loved her - the light was dimmed for the night and she peacefully departed.

听She was a woman of the wartime generation, joining the RAF cadets as a teenager and getting to parade, much to her pride, in front of Queen Elizabeth. And there was much struggle - she raised four children with little money or help and battled cancer three times - just in 1985 she was told she had only six weeks to live!

听At her funeral we sang hymns that poignantly, she鈥檇 chosen herself and cried, remembering how music and song really were a bright thread of joy that ran through her many challenges. She loved to sing: and we always did when we were together. We sang her songs - like You are my sunshine, and the Sound of Music, and her favourite hymn 鈥楬ow Great Thou Art鈥. Having a son, (my Dad) who鈥檇 become a Hare Krishna monk at 17 - occasionally she鈥檇 sing Hare Krishna and other Hindu chants with us.

听In my own tradition singing is a way of daily life. Songs and mantras connect me with an inner world, and offer deep connection with community and my own faith. But like anything, it鈥檚 easy to get distracted and spend more time on things that mean less.

听Among many other things my grandmother鈥檚 life reminds me of the power of song - how it鈥檚 something that I can carry with me always, rich or poor, sick or healthy, in heatwaves and on wet Mondays. My life may be easier than hers, but as I read the news I think the world is no easier a place. I鈥檓 grateful for the magic that music brings to my life and the timely reminder to in all moments sing from the heart, Oh God, how great thou art!
