Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Tanya Muneera Williams, cultural producer:
In the early 2000s, I left my home town Bristol for the city of London. Had you asked me back then, I was convinced there was nothing good about Bristol. Though I know better now, my hometown felt like a wee village in comparison to the allure of London. Dear London with its bright lights and twenty-four-hour transport, music of all kinds, people of all kinds, food of all kinds. In this city I felt like I could be free, and truly be who I wanted to be鈥 not that I knew who I wanted to be, but this was at least my opportunity to explore. Bristol equalled antiquated while London equalled future.听
Bristol was a pretty city and I promised myself I would return to visit family but it simply could not match up to the new city I called home. In the first few years, I didn鈥檛 do to well with keeping my 鈥榗ome home promise鈥, I would return to Bristol during the festive season and that was it. I missed landmark moments in the lives of those close to me, birthdays, weddings, christenings and even funerals. I never imagined that years later I would be taping up boxes once again this time migrating back to Bristol. It was not on my terms so there was a lot of anxiety involved, the childhood me emerged waiting to confirm what I already knew. But when I arrived at my new home, to my surprise, one of my oldest friends was waiting to help me unpack.听
Al Ghazali was an 11th century Imam, philosopher, and Muslim mystic, he wrote many books including the alchemy of happiness. His writing was predominately concerned with finding true contentment and a sense of belonging. Recently someone gifted me a bookmark with a quote of his which reminds me of my relationship with Bristol then and now, he states 鈥淭hose who look for seashells will find seashells, those who open those same seashells will indeed find pearls鈥 Moving to any city, even the one where you were born comes with its own mixed bag of ups and downs but finally, almost 20 years later, in Bristol, thanks to the faithfulness of old friends I have prised open the seashell and found a delightful pearl.
