Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

I’m just recently back from a pilgrimage to the holy site of Lourdes, in the Pyrenees. The saying goes, Lourdes is all about ‘pray hard and play hard’ and I certainly had a great time, even managing to go out clubbing in my dog collar. But like most experiences it was the people that made it. Like unexpectedly bumping in to one of my old rugby team mates, Kate Fitz, and a lovely couple called Sue and Martin, whose son Simon plays bass in a band - I think they are called ‘The Kaiser Chiefs’! Your mam and dad are very proud of you by the way Simon  (but the stories they told me…!’)

I also met a wonderful older lady called Mary, beautiful blue eyes and shiny silver hair. Now as well as a wheel chair to help her get around Mary had been assigned two teenagers, with strong arms and kind hearts, Rachel and Eleanor. Their job was to make sure she made it to meals and didn’t miss mass and despite the age difference they were all having a wonderful time, alternating between silent reflection and fits of giggles. And whether her eyes were closed in prayer or her face wide with smiles Mary looked utterly beautiful every single time I saw her. The girls called her ‘Lovely Mary’ and I could see why.

Watching them together reminded me of one of the verses from the book of Proverbs in the bible, ‘The glory of youths is in their strength but the beauty of the aged is in their grey hair’.

This week there’s been a trend for an app that ages you, you know the one? Programme in your profile pic and it paints you to look how you might in the years to come, silver haired and wrinkled. All have us have known and loved people who, sadly were not around long enough to get grey hairs or to have to rely on the young to help them get about. So, for those of us who will get that joy and are blessed to make it to old age, perhaps it’s up to us to not fear it but view ageing as an honour and see the beauty that grey hair brings. Because if I end up looking anything like lovely Mary did in the south of France summer sunshine, I’ll be absolutely thrilled.
