Good morning. Marching to the beat of a different drum – a popular saying borrowed from the writings of American philosopher Henry David Thoreau – suggests that it is a healthy thing to be a little sceptical of things which are baked hard as givens or norms. 
The person who marches to the beat of a different drum will be slow to re-tweet the faddishness half-truths which race past us daily on their way to oblivion in the cyber-sphere. Such a person will pause, consider, interrogate the facts, consider again and perhaps, just maybe, say something but only if to do so would be a blessing. 
The person who marches to the beat of a different drum will be passionately concerned about what people think; just largely indifferent to what people think of them. Such a person will hold dearly to life and invest in it where it is to be found, but hold lightly to their own life, ready to surrender it in a heartbeat, when their time comes. 
The person who marches to the beat of a different drum will be unafraid to expose falsehood and will be ready to burst the bubble of hubris, but only so that truth can do its liberating work. Can we thank God today for those we know, or know about, who march to the beat of a different drum, and by doing so give us permission to imagine the world differently, and then to live as if it were so. 
Lord God, may you beat a truthful rhythm for us to capture. For Jesus, whose uncanny ability to walk out of step with the rest of us, showed us how to march without a limp. Amen.
