Seasonal peas, thin soils and the health benefits of gardening

The health and wellbeing benefits of gardening are central to the ethos behind Dr Neil's garden in Edinburgh, growing and cooking fresh garden peas plus coping with thin soils.

Nicola Singleton and the team help you make the most of your growing space, whatever shape and size it comes in, and inspire you with a weekly seasonal recipe.

Today they鈥檙e visiting Dr Neil鈥檚 Garden in Edinburgh, located in a beautiful spot between Arthur Seat and Duddingston Loch.

Jim Baird explains how the garden was created by two local doctors, married couple Nancy and Andrew Neil. They were firm believers in the health and wellbeing benefits of gardening and encouraged their patients to help out.

This ethos continues and some of the current crop of volunteer gardeners tell us how it benefits them.

Meanwhile, in the Kitchen Neil Forbes shows Gillian Russell how to make the most of fresh summer peas with a delicious and easy peasy Petits Pois a la Francaise. There are also plenty of tips on growing your own.

Carole Baxter demonstrates how you can still have trees in your garden even if you have limited space.

And head gardener Claudia Pottier explains how they are overcoming issues with thin soils and shade and making use of unusual cooking ingredients from the garden.
