Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Tanya Muneera Williams, cultural producer:
Last Sunday I pulled out my sunglasses for the first time this month, proof that summer may have finally arrived. A band of merry friends and I set off on a road trip to what looked like a fairy tale forest in the middle of the countryside. We went there for the wedding of one of our dear friends Rachel and her long term partner Ben. Rachel is a storyteller with a gift of taking her listeners to worlds they could never have imagined so we knew her wedding would be no different.聽
They named their day 鈥楾he great big love festival of entwinement鈥. They did not disappoint, the bride looked like a mythical princess, the day included scrumptious food, custom made wedding ceremony, bales of hay, and lots of singing. Like no gathering I had ever been to before, what was enchanting about this one, was the sheer diversity of people who attended. The visitors from across the globe, spanning across generations and from different backgrounds were invited to take part in the ceremony, as well as my friends and I who contributed to the general populous.聽
We stood together in union to testify that this couple loved each other, and just as they were committed, we too were committed to supporting them on their latest adventure. Muslim American Writer and public speaker Yasmin Mogahed speaks of the need to create a world around oneself which is safe and a place of thriving. In a prayer she states 鈥淥 my Lord, make my soul a sanctuary, a fortress within. That no one and nothing can disturb. A place of calm, silence, and serenity, untouched by the outside world.鈥 The world of Rachel and Ben鈥檚 wedding was about as eclectic and beautifully colourful as the lives which they have etched for themselves. In a speech, someone commented 鈥渢his is the wedding that we all want or wished we had, if only we were brave enough to lay the bricks and build it鈥.聽
Last Sunday I did not only soak up the rays of the sun, but I was also reminded that my world can be any shade I want it, as long as I am brave enough to build it.
