Greenhouse gas emissions in the UK would be to cut to almost zero by 2050 under new government plans to tackle climate change. Britain is the first major economy to propose the target. It means emissions from homes, transport, farming and industry will have to be avoided completely. The other possibility is to offset the gases by planting trees that absorb carbon or attempt to capture it and store it underground. One example of a project underway is Drax in North Yorkshire, the largest power plant in the UK, which has started capturing some of the carbon dioxide as it moves through the plant's chimney.
